An Acadian family in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli: JOSEPH THÉRIAULT AND AGNÈS CORMIER

Sorry, there is no translation available yet for this content. However, we invite you to consult the original version in French.

In May 2009, Jean-Daniel Thériault, a member of our Association, self-published a book entitled: Une famille acadienne à Saint-Jean-Port-Joli : Joseph Thériault et Agnès Cormier – Notes généalogiques et iconographie. (An Acadian family in St-Jean-Port-Joli: Joseph Thériault and Agnès Cormier – Genealogical Notes and Iconography)

This book provides historical and genealogical information on this family originally from the Beaubassin area, who fled Acadia in 1759 to find shelter in Saint-François de Montmagny, Québec. In 1763, the family settled definitively on a land concession of the L’Islet-à-la-Peau fiefdom that was then part of the Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies parish but would be transferred to the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli parish in 1775.

The reader will discover that the descendants of Joseph and Agnès are found not only on the South Shore of the St-Lawrence, but also in several other regions of Québec, in New Brunswick and even in the USA. The author has concentrated his effort on the couple’s descendants who have retained the name Thériault and were native of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and the surrounding parishes. Among those male descendants who have retained the name Thériault, the book discusses the following people: Jacques-Léon (husband of Marie-Françoise Fortin), Anselme (husband of Romaine Thibault), Charles (husband of Marie-Anne Blondeau dit Verbois), Antoine (husband of Madeleine Dionne and Appoline Leclerc), Jacob (husband of Madeleine Morin), Joseph-Marie (husband of Marie-Sophie Dupont), Pierre-Cyrille (husband of Marie-Angèle Tardif and Scholastique Pelletier), Joseph (husband of Adéline Dubé), Cyprien (husband of Desanges Bélanger and Praxède Dumas), Parfait (husband of Adèle Fournier and Malvina Pellerin), Salluste (husband of Léa Saint-Pierre), Servule (husband of Joséphine Tremblay), Joseph-Cyprien (husband of Florida Deschênes) and Parfait Junior (husband of Malvina Bourgault).

Furthermore, this 165-page book includes thorough research on the evolution of the ancestral land from 1763 to 1959 and presents a voluminous iconography made up of more than 175 illustrations of descendants of Joseph and Agnès, parish priests, notaries, villages, houses, churches, maps, sketches, etc. A very large number of these illustrations were up to now unpublished.

This book is available at a cost of $30 plus shipping ($12 for shipping in Canada).
